What Diamond Grinding Does and Why Prep Matters

Diamond grinding is what separates real industrial finishes from DIY kits. It’s the surface preparation step that lets any coating, polish, or overlay bond mechanically to the concrete — instead of just sitting on top.

What “mechanical bond” actually means

A diamond grinder opens the concrete’s top layer, removing laitance (the weak surface) and exposing the strong aggregate beneath. The coating that follows seeps into the open texture and locks in mechanically — like clutching fingers between coating and slab.

Without that mechanical interlock, the coating is just glued on chemically. Glue fails. Mechanical bonds last.

In industry terms, we grind to a CSP 2 to 3 surface profile — measurably rough, ideal for almost any coating or polish. The result is a system that bonds permanently to the slab and survives decades of use.
