Properly sealed concrete countertops are exceptionally durable and stain-resistant. Care is simple — here's what to expect.

Sealer is the difference

Concrete Countertops start as concrete — porous, capable of staining. The sealer is what makes them stain-proof for kitchen use. Quality food-safe sealers (penetrating polyurethane, epoxy-based food-safe products) block oils, acids, and pigments from soaking in.

With proper sealer, daily kitchen use is no problem. Coffee, wine, oil — all wipe up cleanly. The countertop performs like any high-end surface.

What to do and avoid

Do:

  • Wipe spills promptly
  • Use cutting boards for chopping
  • Use coasters under hot pots
  • Clean with neutral cleaner

Avoid:

  • Strong acids (lemon juice for hours, vinegar undiluted)
  • Direct heat above 350°F
  • Bleach and ammonia cleaners
  • Abrasive scrubbing pads

These are the same rules you’d follow for high-end stone or wood. Done right, a sealed concrete countertop performs beautifully for decades and develops a subtle patina over time that many homeowners love.

The sealer eventually needs refreshing — every 1-3 years for heavy-use kitchens, longer for lighter use. The refresh is a quick visit and restores the protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will coffee or wine stain? +

Not with a quality food-safe sealer. Spills wipe right up.

How heat-resistant? +

Hot pans up to about 350°F are fine. Beyond that the sealer can be damaged.

What about cuts and scratches? +

Concrete is harder than wood but softer than stone. Use cutting boards — that's standard for most surfaces anyway.
