How Long Does a Polished Concrete Floor Last?
Polished concrete lasts 20+ years residentially and 10-20 years commercially. The slab is the finish — there's no coating to fail.
20+ years residentially is the norm
Polished Concrete is the longest-lasting decorative concrete finish available. Residentially, expect 20+ years with normal use. Commercially, 10-20 years depending on traffic intensity.
The reason is structural: there’s no coating to peel. The slab itself is the finish. Lithium-silicate densifier permanently hardens the surface. Diamond polishing permanently refines the texture. Nothing wears off because the floor isn’t a “thing on top” of the slab — it’s the slab.

What can shorten the life
Three things can:
- Slab cracks from foundation movement. Same issue any floor would have.
- Excessive chemical exposure. Strong acids, bleach, ammonia. Avoid them.
- Heavy impact damage. Drop a heavy tool with a steel point and you can chip the surface. Rare.
None of these are coating-style failures. Polished concrete doesn’t peel, doesn’t yellow, doesn’t bubble. It just keeps looking like the day it was installed, with the right maintenance.
For commercial spaces with extreme wear, re-burnishing every 5-10 years restores shine without full re-polishing. Residential floors rarely need it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does polished last longer than coatings? +
No coating to peel. The slab is the floor. As long as the slab is intact, the polished surface is.
Will it look the same in 10 years? +
Essentially yes. Minimal wear. The shine may need re-burnishing in extremely high-traffic commercial — rare residentially.
Does it ever need re-polishing? +
Decades into use, possibly — but rare. Re-burnishing restores shine without full re-polishing.
